Who Should Apply
The programme is open to applicants of all nationalities — with strong encouragement for qualified candidates from developing countries — and is designed to nurture the next generation of global climate and development leaders. To be eligible, candidates must:
- Be enrolled in a Master’s or PhD programme, or be a recent graduate — for certain positions, a Bachelor’s degree is also eligible
- Have academic training relevant to GCF’s mission — climate, environment, finance, economics, data science, law, policy, engineering, IT, communications, or related disciplines
- Possess excellent proficiency in English
- Be proficient in standard software programmes — MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access

Climate Finance & Investment Operations Interns in this stream work at the very heart of GCF’s financial machinery — supporting project pipeline analysis, investment decision-making processes, and strategic coordination across the Fund’s global portfolio of climate projects. This is where climate ambition meets financial execution.
Country Programming & Regional Teams These internships provide insight into GCF’s work in developing regions, supporting project pipelines, partnerships, and country engagement giving interns a front-row seat to how climate priorities are shaped and implemented at the national level across Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and beyond.
Legal & Governance Interns in legal and governance functions assist the Office of the General Counsel and various oversight mechanisms, gaining exposure to institutional policies, compliance requirements, and stakeholder engagement building a rare understanding of how international climate institutions are governed and held accountable.
Risk Management & Operational Safeguards Interns in this area contribute to ensuring that GCF-funded projects are socially and environmentally sound — supporting processes that protect vulnerable communities and ecosystems from unintended harm while maximizing climate impact.
Department of Corporate Services This stream offers interns operational, analytical, and administrative support experience at the General Services and Events Management levels providing a comprehensive introduction to how a major international institution runs its day-to-day operations.
What You Will Receive (Fully Funded)
Monthly Stipend Interns receive a monthly stipend of USD $1,600 (net) — a competitive allowance that makes this one of the most financially attractive internship programmes in the UN system for emerging climate professionals.
Health Insurance & Leave Interns receive free comprehensive global health insurance coverage, as well as paid leave, sick days, and holidays throughout their placement ensuring their well-being is fully protected during the six months.
