ACIF is a grant funding opportunity designed to support African innovators advancing innovative, equitable, and resilient urban solutions across cities in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was launched through a collaboration between The Million Lives Collective and the Judith Neilson Foundation.
The grant ACIF will officially open for applications in early 2026, inviting pairs of African innovators to apply for flexible grant funding of up to $75,000 to design and pilot new collaborative solutions to urban challenges. Beyond the money, awardees will also receive technical assistance, coaching, and partnership support.
Why it was created African cities are experiencing unprecedented growth, with the urban population expanding at the fastest rate globally projections indicate this population will double to approximately 1.4 billion people by 2050, placing immense pressure on public infrastructure and services.
What makes it distinctive The fund introduces a novel approach by prioritizing partnerships over individual ventures. It requires applicants to form collaborations between startups, civic groups, and public agencies from the outset of their projects, acknowledging that complex urban issues like transport, housing, and climate stress demand integrated, multi-sectoral responses.
Thematic focus areas The fund targets innovations in circular production, climate-resilient services and infrastructure, digital equity, youth employment, and the creation of safer urban spaces — all focused on improving outcomes for people living on less than $5.50 per day.
Who can apply The fund is open to innovators from civil society, technology, urban planning, social enterprise, environmental sustainability, and related fields, provided their work aligns with Sub-Saharan African urban challenges.
Applications open early 2026
