Opportunity Overview
The programme is implemented by the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF) with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). DIFEC aims to accelerate the development and scaling of digital technologies that expand access to clean energy and strengthen climate resilience across the region.
Funding Details
The DIFEC programme provides non-repayable grant funding combined with venture-building support for selected enterprises.
Grant Amount
Successful applicants may receive grant funding ranging from US$150,000 to US$400,000 per enterprise, depending on the stage of business development.
Funding Windows
Growing Window (Early-Stage Companies)
Funding range:US$150,000-US$300,000
Target applicants: startups with a minimum viable product (MVP) seeking to test and expand their digital innovation.
Scaling Window (Growth-Stage Companies)
Funding range: US$250,000-US$400,000
Target applicants: companies with commercial traction, active customers, and revenue generation.

The fund supports enterprises deploying digital innovations that accelerate energy access and climate resilience, including:
Digital platforms for distributed renewable energy systems
PAYGo and digital financing models for energy access
Smart energy monitoring and management technologies
Climate data platforms and analytics tools
Digital systems for clean cooking and energy distribution
E-mobility and productive use of energy technologies
Climate-smart agriculture and circular economy solutions
Eligibility
Applicants should meet the following criteria:
Private sector companies or startups
Developing digital technologies related to climate or energy
Operating or planning to operate in Sub-Saharan Africa
Demonstrating scalability and measurable climate impact
Growth-stage companies applying for the Scaling Window should also demonstrate:
Commercial traction
Revenue generation
Potential for regional expansion.
